Environment
Real World Carbon Impact
Anjung Solaris’ core in Sustainable Timber Plantations in very essence meets the Environmental Guidelines in ESG. We do not work with natural forests, only degraded forests and land for which our organisation did not financially benefit from its primary logging.
We strive to produce high quality planting material in our efforts to reduce the impact of deforestation. We work hard to ensure the economic viability in growing sustainable timber.
Fast-growing timber like Cadamba are massive carbon sinks as they grow at very rapid rates, thus consuming a huge amount of carbon from the atmosphere to form the cellulose, hemicelluloses and lignin that form the tree. Tree mass (wood) is in fact an encapsulation of carbon from the atmosphere. The faster a tree grows, the more carbon it captures. Thus, a Cadamba plantation that is rotationally harvested every 6 years will be constantly sinking carbon at a very rapid rate compared to traditional slow-growing timber plantations.
Social
People In Mind
Anjung Solaris’ culture and values are people and community centric where possible. We are proud to say we have a 100% native workforce, something not many Malaysian plantations can assert to have. We have developed strategies and HR methods to engage the locals, manage their diversity and sub-cultures, and utilise a workforce of men and women in a spectrum of roles.
We maintain a good relationship with surrounding villages, ensuring genuine engagement and interest is shown to their needs when we conduct business at a particular location. Cultural generalisation has been the primary hurdle in corporates understanding the complexity of the Asian agriculture labour environment.
We have setup a tissue culture laboratory that primarily engages rural communities. We partner with a social enterprise that works closely with marginalised native communities to train and equip these communities with skills to improve their lives. They direct a majority of their profits back to these communities by building schools, better infrastructure and other basic necessities these communities require.
Governance
Transparency & Accountability
Transparency and accountability are the core of our ethos. We generate confidence by demonstrating the manner in which we handle different challenges, highlighting right and wrong decisions and learning from them. The nature of our business is highly dynamic and requires constant proactive and reactionary responses to challenges that occur on a daily basis.
By utilising cutting-edge drone and GIS Data Assets, we are able to track with great accuracy the progress on the ground and monitor key deliverables and milestones on site. We present key unadulterated data to provide accountability and ensure their monitoring of our progress is effortless and painless. In effect, the data on-site keeps the management and our customers aligned.
We have a whistle-blower policy in place and a zero tolerance policy on graft and theft.
